My grandson’s birthday present.

Thought I's give everyone a sneak preview of my grandson Garrett's birthday present.

A friend of mine wanted me to teach him to build guitars and the first one he wanted to build was a little parlor style. I decided I would build one along with him and give it to my grandson for his birthday.

We used some local walnut that I got from a sawmill down the road for back and sides. Some "not so good" spruce that I bought off ebay for the top. The bracing is some leftovers that I bought from Aircraft spruce a couple of years ago. Neck is mahogany with a rosewood fretboard and Grover tuners. Binding is maple that I picked up locally as well.

Specs:

Scale - 24"
Width at upper bout - 8.5"
Width at lower bout - 11"
Width at waist - 6.25"
Depth at neck - 3"
Depth at tail - 3.625"
Top is x-braced

Wow Dave that is a small guitar, 11" lower bout. I love it. You can really build those light. Very nice.

Thanks guys!

It is still loosening up, I just strung it up this morning. But it sounds pretty sweet. The trebels are amazing. The volume really surprised me. It is way louder than it looks like it would be.

The action is pretty nice on that 24" scale too. Maybe tomorrow, or in a couple of days I can give a better report on the sound.

Great job, what a wonderful present. You put a G on the headstock just for him, I am sure he is going to be excited. Maybe he can help you build his next one!

Some "not so good" spruce? That top looks lovely! I'd like to see what you consider truly great.

I forgot to mention that the shape of this one is based on the salon guitar plans from GAL. We copied the shape fairly closely, but other than that we just figured out the rest as we went along.

My buddy doesn't have his completed yet. When he get it done I'll try to post some pics of it as well.
